The Marine Life Information Network for Britain and Ireland (MarLIN) is an initiative of the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth (www.mba.ac.uk).  MarLIN (www.marlin.ac.uk) provides information to support environmental management, protection, and education. 

MarLIN is recruiting a marine ecologist to provide maternity cover managing its Biodiversity and Conservation Science (BACS) programme.  The BACS Manager post is a job share position. The team work closely to develop the BACS programme as a major resource applying science to conservation advice and further developing the resource of information on marine biodiversity and its conservation and management in the UK.  

The BACS Manager will be expected to undertake a significant proportion of research and fund raising to further developing the MarLIN website, BIOTIC, sensitivity assessment and other MarLIN resources to support marine spatial planning, MPAs and marine environmental management in the UK.  The BACS Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the BACS programme including managing staff and volunteers.  The BACS Manager will contribute to MarLIN's contract research activities and expand our current expertise is this area; including tendering for and winning new research contracts. 

The post is part-time (0.6 FTE) and for a period of 6 months with a possible extension to 9 months. The appointment is at Level 3 of the UCEA pay scale for Academic and Higher Education Staff depending on experience and pay is expected to be in the range £25,000 to £30,000 (pro-rata).

Essential skills

Minimum qualifications required are a PhD in relevant topic (marine ecology, marine conservation) and/or relevant post-graduate degree and 2 years experience.  Core competencies are:

  1. Knowledge of taxonomy and biology sufficient to understand where to find information on marine species and the meaning of technical terms describing their biology.
  2. Knowledge and experience of marine ecology and UK marine habitats and species.
  3. Experience of the use of science within the marine conservation and/or policy sector.
  4. A high regard for the importance of quality control and a view of how to achieve/maintain it.
  5. Evidence of competence, commitment, accuracy and the achievement of deadlines.
  6. Proven ability to prepare written scientific or technical reports to a high standard and of the presentation of science to a diverse audience.
  7. Proven ability to prepare successful contract and grant applications.
  8. Demonstrable experience of project and/or contract management.
  9. Experience of working within a team.
  10. Experience in the use of standard software packages, e.g. the MS Office suite.

Desirable skills

Experience of any of the following would be an advantage: the analysis of benthic survey data or marine habitats in British and Irish waters; Environmental Impact Assessment; 'driving forces' behind marine protection in UK and Europe; the development and use of biological databases (use of MYSQL and MS Access); and the use of geospatial information in decision-making and planning (including a basic knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS); and a working knowledge of multivariate statistical packages (e.g. PRIMER).
