Job Code: ACDR- 01

The British University in Egypt (BUE) is seeking to appoint a Coordinator for Learning and Teaching Enhancement. Candidates must have experience of academic administration in a British University or other UK Higher Education Institution. The post will be for two years in the first instance. Seconded appointments will be considered.

BUE is a private, not-for-profit, Egyptian University near Cairo that offers a British style higher education and ethos. It was established in 2005 and graduated its first students in 2009. There are four faculties: Business Administration, Economics and Political Science; Engineering; Informatics and Computer Science; Nursing.

Loughborough University is BUE's main strategic partner and validates programmes in all faculties except Nursing, with the latter being validated by Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

Almost 3000 students are registered in the current academic year.

An attractive remuneration and benefits package will be provided. This will include a competitive salary paid in sterling net of Egyptian taxes, medical insurance, 30 days annual leave per year (in addition to local and national holidays), rent-free University accommodation with shared access to a car and driver, membership of the local sports club, and one economy return air ticket home per year for the successful candidates and accompanying family.

The Coordinator for Learning and Teaching Enhancement is a post reporting directly to the Academic Director. It was created last year in recognition of this new University's need to strengthen and embed Quality Assurance and Enhancement processes related to Learning, Teaching and Assessment. This is in the context of a revalidation exercise with its partner University, Loughborough.

Once the revalidation exercise is complete, in October 2010, the above processes will be not only sustained but deepened and extended across the University. The post holder will report directly to the Academic Director in implementing the policies to achieve this. The priorities are to:

  1. support the effective delivery of a developmental approach to learning, teaching and assessment across all programmes reflecting best UK practice.
  2. establish good working relations with the Quality and Validation Office and embed learning and teaching quality assurance and enhancement processes, and the annual quality cycle, within each programme area to enhance and strengthen delivery of programmes.
  3. support the delivery of a Staff Development Programme to enhance the teaching, learning and assessment skills of staff with a key focus on delivering the underpinning ethos of the university: learn how to think not what to think.
  4. support the development and implementation of academic student support functions across programmes.
  5. participate in the Learning Resources and Teaching Committee and other working groups in supporting the sharing of curriculum development and good practice across programmes.

Candidates should have a higher degree and preferably have completed an accredited course in teaching and learning in higher education. Successful teaching experience, an innovative approach and interest in pedagogy will be a distinct advantage. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written skills, together with strong IT and information skills. They should work well independently and in a team and have experience of supporting British learning in higher education, with a firm knowledge of UK quality norms and procedures. Enthusiasm for, and resourcefulness about delivering them in a bicultural context is essential.

Candidates are kindly requested to send a completed application form (indicating job title and reference number in the email subject) via EMAIL to Jobvacancies-uk@bue.edu.eg. For further details and the application process, please refer to the BUE website ( www.bue.edu.eg). Candidates may contact the University Academic Director, Professor Leslie Croxford (lcroxford@bue.edu.eg) via email indicating their telephone number and availability for an informal initial telephone conversation. This would indicate the recruitment process including the timing and location of interviews.
