Applications are invited for a DPhil studentship in Experimental Soft Condensed Matter, to work under the supervision of Dr Roel Dullens. The studentship is part of a European Research Council funded project that is focused on the crystallisation and glass formation in impurity doped colloidal systems.

The DPhil studentship is focussed on the chemical aspects of the project, which includes the development and characterisation of new colloidal model systems for optical tweezing and confocal microscopy. Chemical synthesis techniques will be used to synthesise polymeric and inorganic colloidal particles, of which the properties will be characterised using a range of techniques such as electron microscopy and light scattering. The colloidal model systems will be used to study colloidal crystallisation and glass formation using holographic optical tweezing, confocal microscopy and quantitative data analysis.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate who has a background in chemistry, chemical physics or an allied subject. The studentships will cover the cost of a DPhil course for up to 3.5 years. The position is available from October 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter.
