EPSRC Collaboration between the University of Reading and Network Rail

Department/School: The Technologies for Sustainable Built Environments (TSBE) Centre, School of Construction Management and Engineering

Supervisors: The academic supervisors will be Prof. Martin Sexton, Dr. Libby Schweber and Dr. Jacopo Torriti. Supervision will also be provided by Network Rail.

Project Overview:

Network Rail is at the heart of revitalising Britain's railways. From the rejuvenation of King's Cross station and Europe's largest civil engineering project - Crossrail - they are involved in some of the most ambitious and diverse ventures the UK has ever seen. The business continues to own and maintain an extensive and diverse estate comprising over 2000 properties ranging in size and age.

The Company are committed to delivering the better railway that is vital for the economic prosperity of the UK and to transform how people travel. This commitment includes developing a whole life sustainability approach to project and asset management. This Engineering Doctorate, research project will investigate the application of sustainability evaluation tools and techniques to buildings and projects. Expected outcomes will include the development of lifecycle assessment tools that will enable Network Rail to apply the whole system approach to projects in a robust and effective manner.

This four-year studentship will initially be based at the Network Rail offices in London and then moving to their new National Centre in Milton Keynes, opening mid-2012, with attendance also required at the University of Reading.

Eligibility:

We are seeking self-motivated, enthusiastic applicants with a background in construction, construction management, surveying, real -estate, energy or engineering. Applicants must possess a good degree (2:1 or higher) or MSc in a related area. Numeracy skills will be required and the desire to do good quality doctoral level research is essential.

Funding Details: 4 year Package

Stipend of £19,800 (£15,480 tax-free, funded by EPSRC)

All tuition fees are included

EngD awarded by the University of Reading
