Bangor, Swansea and Aberystwyth Universities are pleased to announce the start of their SEACAMS (Sustainable Expansion of the Coastal and Marine Sectors) project, funded under the Convergence Framework by the Welsh European Funding Office.

The SEACAMS projects aims to increase commercially-driven Research and Development; maximise economic impact of research & business and to expand knowledge-based/technology companies, with a focus on adaptation and mitigation to climate change in the most economically-valuable and most impacted part of the environment - the coastal zone.

SEACAMS' specific objectives are to:

  1. Increase investment in commercially-driven R & D that exploits opportunities related to climate change imperatives and both adaptation and mitigation measures in coastal and marine environments.
  2. Expand and maximise the economic impact of academia & business in the marine sector.
  3. Support and expand knowledge-based/ technology companies in Wales.
  4. Promote the benefits of innovation and marine science to increase inward investment.

Four Industrial Research Officers/Fellows to address business needs in the main science areas of the project: Coastal Oceanography and Resource Exploitation (CORE) and Environmental Quality Assessment (EQA).

Applications are invited from candidates with a minimum of a good environmental science degree and PhD or relevant commercial experience, ideally with marine-related training and relevant commercial background.

Appointments will be made across these themes and candidates are asked to specify to which theme(s) their qualifications are most appropriate.

Two of these will be more senior posts specialising in (i) ocean and climate modelling and (ii) acoustic and optical measurements All positions are to work within SOS/CAMS and will be predominantly based on the SOS site in Menai Bridge.

Successful candidates will be expected to start within the next 4 months but as soon as possible after 1st April 2011.  These posts are permanent and will be subject to a satisfactory probationary period. They are fully funded for between 48 - 50 months and there is an expectation that the successful candidates will look to securing further funding for continuation of these posts.
