The Department of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London, invites applications for a lectureship in politics and international relations, tenable from 1 September 2012.
Together with the appointment of a Senior Lecturer/Reader position, this position is the first during what we expect will be a sustained period of expansion for the Department over the next few years. They will contribute particularly on the following key initiatives: the establishment of a new single honours degree in International Relations, to commence in September 2013, and the recent establishment of a Masters in Transnational Security Studies.
We welcome applicants with research areas across politics and international relations that can support these developments, but are particularly interested in applicants who can bring us expertise in new areas while also complementing and shoring up existing strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to foundational teaching in international relations at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, as well as offer specialist option courses in international relations or international politics. He or she will have an established record of research excellence, or demonstrable potential for such excellence.
The Department was founded in August 2004 and has quickly established its research base focused on four research units: the Centre for European Politics, the Centre for Global and Transnational Politics, the New Political Communication Unit, and the Contemporary Political Theory Research Group.
In its first entry into the RAE (2008), the Department was ranked in the top ten among small Politics departments in the UK, finishing 9th among those with fewer than 20 researchers, and 2nd among those with fewer than 15 researchers. The Department is now 18 permanent academic members of staff in size.
Royal Holloway is one of the major Colleges of the federal University of London and is among the elite group of UK university institutions. In RAE 2008, the College ranked 16th out of 159 UK institutions of higher education in terms of the proportion of its research belonging in the highest possible category (4-star).
You will demonstrate strong evidence of research excellence and make important contributions to the delivery of the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will be an effective team player and an active and vital member of this busy and intellectually vibrant Department.
It is expected that the successful appointee will have been awarded his or her PhD by September 1, 2012.
