Job Purpose

To provide technical support to research and assist with the execution and publishing of research in line with the project objectives for the post as part of the University of Glasgow polyomics initiative. Specifically, this post will be responsible for:

(i) maintenance and operation of mass spectrometry and separation systems for the University of Glasgow metabolomics and proteomics facilities;

(ii) development of new workflows and methodologies to improve metabolomics and proteomics support at University of Glasgow and

(iii) analysis of complex datasets and communication of the results to collaborators.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Maintenance and operation of mass spectrometry and separation systems for the University of Glasgow metabolomics and proteomics facilities

2. Development of new workflows and methodologies to improve metabolomics and proteomics support at University of Glasgow

3. Analysis of complex datasets and communication of the results to collaborators.

4. Supervision and support of undergraduate and postgraduate students and technicians across the projects as requested by the PI .

5.Direct support of PhD students, and partial responsibility for technicians, research assistants and additional PhD students.

6.Participation in research activities within the group and within the wider interdisciplinary research programme, giving advice and training to project partners and the broader community where necessary.

7.Responsibility for management of customers and relations with collaborators.

8.Active responsibility in establishing the new technologies within the community.

9.Limited teaching of postgraduate and undergraduate students.

10.Leadership on design and implementation of project.

11.Facilitating and maintaining collaborations with industrial partners.

12.To carry out research and other duties in consultation with and under the guidance of the PIs.

13.Contribute to writing up research findings / outcomes for publication and documentation of research results for inclusion in papers, reports, and presentations. Contribution to decision on appropriate journals in consultation with the PI.

14.Contribute to presentation of data at appropriate internal/national/international meetings.

15.To collaborate with other members of the Glasgow Polyomics Facility and external collaborators in order to develop the work of the group as a whole and specifically for the project.

16.To support colleagues and (in association with the PI) supervise less experienced members of the project team including graduate and undergraduate students.

17.To assist with the development and implementation of new methodology and to take an active role in the establishment of this methodology across the Glasgow Polyomics Facility.

18.To liaise with collaborators on collection, storage and supply of samples, and to be responsible for the local cataloguing and storage of these.

19.To keep up to date with current developments in the fields of metabolomics and proteomics.

Salary will be on the Technical and Related Grade, level 7, £31,798 - £35,788 per annum.

This post has funding until end of March 2015.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
