Project: “Capitals of Capital and Consumption: Tracing the causal linkages between high end finance and high end shopping.”
Start date: 1 April 2010
The PhD student will elaborate the theoretical and practical design of the project, develop and conduct case studies, analyse data and publish papers in international scholarly journals; together, this will provide the basis for a PhD thesis, which is to be completed within four years. The PhD student will follow courses and participate in seminars and conferences. He or she will also assist senior faculty members in teaching courses and seminars at the BA and the MA level (max. 10% of the time).

The position is initially for a period of one year; depending on the PhD student’s performance, it may be extended by a maximum of a further three years (i.e. to a total of four years) leading to the completion of a PhD. The gross monthly salary will be €2,042 in the first year and increases to €2,612 in the fourth year, based on a full-time appointment (collective employment agreement (CAO) of Dutch universities). The Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies is one of six departments within the FMG. Research activities are organised within four programme groups: Urban geographies, Planning, institutions and transforming spaces, Geographies of globalizations, and Governance of inclusive development. This research will be anchored within the geographies of globalisations group, though wider links are encouraged.
