The project aims to examine the feasibility of constructing and validating a planning model/tool/method that can be used to a) plan a computer network operation, and b) assess the impact of the operation.

Applications are invited to apply for a UK/EU research studentship relevant to the strategic aims of the University and Faculty to address the following:

Recent cyber events such as GhostNet and Operation Aurora highlight that the nature of intrusions into an organisations infrastructure has changed.

Increasing information is being exfiltrated out of an organisation information infrastructure. Thus the goal of this PhD is to examine the feasibility of constructing and validating a model that can be used to assess the impact of a computer network intrusion. In particular, to create an ontological and taxonomic constructs and metrics that can be used in conjunction with a behavioural engine to assess the impact of the intrusion at the business process level.

The applicant of this project will adopt the following objectives:

  • Definition of emerging policy and practical capabilities in the sphere of Cyberwarfare to develop a framework Concept of Operations;
  • Investigation and development of modelling and simulation technologies capable of providing an analysis of the effect of Computer Network Operations methods on defined target systems;
  • Specific development of innovative toolsets enabling scientific planning of Computer Network Operations events and provision of a level of confidence assessment of preferred course of action.
