Stipend: £13,590 per annum plus UK/EU student tuition fees
Closing date: 27th February 2012
We are currently offering a fully funded 3 year PhD studentship to work on tobacco industry influence over European public health policy. The studentship is designed to run alongside a major US National Cancer Institute grant (Tobacco companies, global governance and public health, http://cancercontrol.cancer.gov/grants/abstract.asp?applid=8163761) and provides a potentially exciting opportunity to examine transnational tobacco company efforts to influence proposed revisions to the European Union's Tobacco Products Directive. The Products Directive constitutes a major opportunity to introduce mandatory pictorial warnings combined with standardised packaging in the European Union. The legislation promises to radically reduce the ability of major tobacco manufacturers to use packaging as a marketing tool and is being fiercely resisted by the industry. The successful applicant will be expected to map and evaluate the industry's opposition using a mix of methodological approaches.
The candidate will join the Tobacco Control group, based in the Department for Health at the University of Bath. Further information on the research strengths and track record of the group can be found at http://www.bath.ac.uk/health/tobacco/.
Applicants are invited from individuals with a strong academic record who wish to develop a career in research. Candidates should usually have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (which may include subjects within the social and policy sciences, business studies and human geography) and preferably also a good Masters degree in public health or other relevant subject. Applicants must also be fluent in spoken and written English (please see the following web-link for information on entry and English requirements http://www.bath.ac.uk/study/pg/programmes/scho-for-heal-mphi).
The PhD programme is open to UK and EU students (due to funding restrictions). The funding is for 3 years and covers both fees and living expenses. Research progress is assessed each year and continuing receipt of funds will depend on satisfactory progress. The stipend will be £13,590 pa (tax free and full admission fees paid) and the successful candidate will be expected to complete the PhD during the award period.
