The School of Environment and Development (SED) at the University of Manchester is delighted to announce the following funding opportunities for well qualified candidates looking to commence their studies beginning September 2012.

ESRC North West Doctoral Training Centre Studentships
(1) ESRC CASE Awards
The following studentships are available to cover UK/EU fees and an annual Research Council maintenance grant (was £13,590 in 2011/12 for full-time UK students only) for up to three years:
The project involves working with Our Life to examine alcohol consumption of young people aged 15-25 in contrasting geographic communities in Manchester, based on ethnographic research methods, including in-depth interviewing and participant observation.
This project involves working with AGMA (the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities) to examine UK and international efforts to reconcile improved flood risk management with local economic development.
To be considered for the above CASE awards, candidates must initially contact the respective main supervisor who will provide details of the application procedures.
(2) ESRC open competition awards
Applications are encouraged with proposals that fit with SED's research interests in the 3 ESRC DTC Pathways: Geography; Development Studies, and Town Planning (including some aspects of Architecture).
Applicants are expected to have a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or its international equivalent), and a relevant postgraduate qualification (generally a Masters degree) with an average grade of 65% (or its international equivalent) and 65% in the dissertation. The awards are available for 1+3 (Masters + PhD) and + 3 (PhD only) study.
To be considered for the ESRC open competition awards candidates must have an offer in place by Friday 2 March 2012 at 12.00 GMT.
