Grade 6: Salary £25,854 - £30,870 p.a.

The School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography seeks applications to recruit a Project Coordinator as part of an international project entitled 'Ritual, community and conflict', based in the Centre for Anthropology and Mind at the University of Oxford, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and directed by Professor Harvey Whitehouse.

The project brings together an international, interdisciplinary team of anthropologists, psychologists, historians, archaeologists, and evolutionary theorists from 13 universities conducting research at field sites in approximately ten countries around the world. This five-year programme of research investigates one of the most powerful mechanisms by which groups may be formed, inspired, and coordinated: ritual. Studying how children learn the rituals of their communities will shed light on the various ways in which rituals promote social cohesion within the group and distrust of groups with different ritual traditions. Qualitative field research and controlled psychological experiments will be conducted in a number of troubled regions (including Northern Ireland, the Middle East, Nepal, and Colombia). The project will start on 1 June 2011.

The postholder will have the role of coordinating the academic research activities of the project, assisting the project's director and management team in maximizing the coherence, efficiency, and impact of research design and implementation, and managing the project's budget and financial processes according to the University's regulations. The postholder will be required to assist with the design and maintenance of the project website, assist in production of research grant applications and liaise with the funders on a range of issues including research design, implementation, reporting, risk management, and dissemination.

The successful applicant will have a Bachelors and/or Masters degree in any of the social, behavioural, psychological, or human sciences (a degree in Business, Management, Economics, or a closely related discipline would be particularly useful), experience of coordinating complex projects or consortia, a capacity for clear strategic thinking, effective communication and time management skills and experience in budget management. Fluency in written and spoken English is also required. Candidates should be willing to work outside of normal hours.

This is a fixed-term post for three years from 1 June 2011.

Candidates will be considered on the basis of the selection criteria outlined in the further particulars which can be obtained by visiting the website at http://www.ox.ac.uk/about_the_university/jobs/fp/ or by emailing katie.grainger@anthro.ox.ac.uk. The further particulars include details of the post and how to apply.

The closing date for applications is noon on 28 March 2011
