The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in the use of large-scale sequencing, informatics and analysis of genetic variation. We use sequence data to further our understanding of infectious disease and generate resources of lasting value to biomedical research.

We are looking for a developer who can work in close collaboration with laboratory staff to understand their requirements and to develop and execute often novel solutions. The role involves ensuring the product meets a high standard both in internal and external quality. 

You should successfully have assured the quality of large scale and high traffic web applications. You live and breathe the web. You're familiar with the technical capabilities and quirks of all User Agents in common use today.

  • You have proven experience writing automated unit, integration and system tests.
  • You are excited by the opportunity to be part of a fast-paced and research based organisation.
  • You are capable of designing and developing a testing infrastructure and scaling a team of QA engineers.
  • You are eager to take on a highly technical QA challenge.
  • Most importantly you love to learn new things. 

Essential Skills

  • You know all the gritty details of what makes or breaks a web application.
  • You are experienced in any or all of Selenium WebDriver/RC, Jenkins, JavaScript, Ruby, CSS, HTML, the DOM, XPATH, Git.

?Ideal Skills

  • Experience with lab IT and automation
  • Understanding of web page/form design and user interfaces
  • Understanding of reporting packages 
  • Worked on github based projects

The Production Software team's central remit is to provide scientific software to support the sequencing and genomic analysis work done at the Sanger Institute. We are a highly visible team, providing high quality, scalable software that plays a central role in the continuing success of the Institute. We are involved in a wide variety of projects ranging from laboratory automation to medical informatics.
